Phil 116 Philosophical Schools in the Han, Wei & Ch'in Dynasties (2 Credits)
Lecturer: Edward CHAU
Description:
The thought of the Ch'in and Han eras is a continuation of the Pre-Ch'in developments, but with an intermingling of the various currents and with the pervasive influence of the Yin-Yang school. Tung Chung Shu's exclusion of the non-Confucian scholars stifled the creativity of Chinese thought. Yet the thought of the Wei and Ch'in Dynasties is characterised by a turning against tradition and an escape from the political turmoil of the time into transcendental aloofness. The revival of the thought of Chuang Tzu and of the Book of Changes gives birth to the Metaphysical School. This course introduces Han, Wei and Ch'in thought, and some of the most representative thinkers.
