Goals:
- To introduce the students to the systematic study of Catholic doctrine, according to the scientific method proper to theology.
- To help the students deepen their own living faith so that they can share it more effectively with others in the building up of a true Christian community.
- To provide the students with the knowledge necessary for effective reflection on the life situation and ever-changing pastoral needs of the local Church.
European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS):
Structure, Study Duration, Student Categories:
- The programme is equivalent to a degree course, of three years for full-time study or four to six years for part-time study.
- The programme curriculum covers 13 major areas, contributing to a total of 180 ECTS. Detailed curriculum can be referred here.
- Students may study the whole programme or take individual courses.
Academic Year:
- The academic year lasts from the beginning of September until the end of May. The break between the semesters is from Christmas to mid-January.
- Class periods are of 50 minutes’ duration. 28 class periods are equivalent to 3 ECTS credits.
- Classes are held on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. If needed, classes may also be arranged on Wednesdays and Saturdays’ mornings.
Entrance Requirements:
- Admission to the Baccalaureate in Theology is open to all, lay or religious, who are marked by their moral conduct and who have the required qualifications; any exception to this norm will be made by the Admissions Committee set up by the Institute’s Director.
- The required qualifications are the following::
- All applicants must have obtained the qualifications for entry into a university in Hong Kong or equivalent;
- They shall have completed two years of Philosophy study (full time) in a Catholic Higher Institute; and
- A working knowledge of Chinese and English is required as teaching and assignments are done through the medium of these two languages.
- If a student does not know Latin II and Biblical Greek I, they must study them before graduation. Those who hold a certificate in Latin I and/or Latin II and/or Greek I are still required to attend 3 language courses chosen from the following: Latin I, Latin II; Greek I, Greek II; Hebrew I.
Theological Thesis:
- Students must write an English thesis (50,000 to 60,000 characters, excluding references) on a theological topic under the guidance of a professor, following the college's prescribed thesis format. The thesis must be submitted no later than one month before the end of the final year.
- If the thesis involves substantial Chinese material, it may be written in Chinese (approximately 8,000 words), but students must also submit an English summary approximately one-third of the thesis length.
Graduation Requirements:
- Students must complete all required courses and some elective courses, and successfully obtain a minimum of 180 credits.
- Complete a theological thesis with a minimum score of 60 out of 100;
- Achieve a minimum overall average of 60 out of 100 for all completed courses;
- Pay all fees required by the Institute and the Pontifical Gregorian University (including tuition and diploma fees).
