Philosophy Program

Goals:

  1. To stimulate the students to reflect in a systematic way on the fundamental questions of life and to be aware of their strengths and limitations in seeking answers to such questions.
  2. To provide a bridge of understanding between the student’s everyday experience and his/her Christian faith.
  3. To cultivate a critical and systematic mind-set for the subsequent study of theology.

Academic Year:

  1. The academic year lasts from the beginning of September until the end of May. The break between the semesters is from Christmas to mid-January.
  2. Class periods are of 50 minutes’ duration. 28 class periods are equivalent to 3.5 ECTS credits.
  3. Classes are held on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. If needed, classes may also be arranged on Wednesdays and Saturdays’ mornings.

Length of Study:

  1. The programme is a diploma course, of two years of full-time study or four years of part-time study. Students may study the whole programme or take individual courses.

Entrance Requirements:

  1. Admission to the Phil. programme is open to all Catholics, lay or religious, who are marked by their moral conduct and who have the required qualifications; any exception to this norm will be made by the Admissions Committee set up by the Seminary College President.
  2. The required qualifications are the following:
    1. All applicants must have obtained the qualifications for entry into a university in Hong Kong or equivalent; and
    2. A working knowledge of Chinese and English is required as teaching and assignments are done through the medium of these two languages.

  1. The Seminary College usually accepts new applications starting from early April.
  2. Applicants should first download an application form from the website of the Seminary College. After filling in the form, they should send it to the Secretariat together with a copy of his/her Identity Card, a copy of all academic diplomas and two recent identical photographs, and accompanied by a duly completed recommendation form from a member of the clergy or a Religious. For members of religious congregations, a letter of introduction from their superior is sufficient.
  3. When returning the application form, an appointment should be made for an interview with the Director of the Philosophy Division. Only after the interview, when it has been determined that the applicant may be admitted, will the applicant be able to proceed with the registration.
